I hate fundraising.

A few days back I was sitting on my couch quietly, just barely getting my eight month old to calm down, when the door bell rang. I answered it to find a three foot tall being muttering something about buying chocolate for $2 “for school.” Now, don’t get me wrong -I loves me my chocolate, but I don’t really feel like supporting “fundraising efforts” that generate more revenue for the fundraising company than the school. I politely turned the small creature down and closed the door.

Time travel to a day later. The doorbell rings and I am confronted with the same three foot bipedal organism. She asks again, quite cherubically, if I’d buy chocolate. I’m thinking perhaps she doesn’t remember hitting this side of the complex already. “How determined!” I think to myself. Again, I politely turn her down and close the door.

Fast forward one additional day. I arrive home from work to find some cheap looking chocolate sitting on the counter. When I inquire of my wife about the “Finest Quality” brand on the chocolate, she tells me she purchased it from a little girl that was, you guessed it, fundraising. We compare notes; it’s the same girl.

Who is coaching these so-called “children” in the ways of door-to-door salesmanship? I wish my wife had read this.

no success in business…

I know that I’m starting this from a potentially (probably hugely) flawed premise, but let’s just run with it.

Assumed: Men that are very successful in business often times are less than successful at home (i.e.: broken marriages, children that are a terror, etc.).

Most of the time, people assume the family is a mess because of the business. What if, in some situations, it’s the other way around? Isn’t it equally possible that the family itself is so unimaginably horrible that the man throws himself full tilt into the business?

Why do we automatically assume the former when it could just as easily be the latter? Well, at least I assume the former…

Punishment?

Hot on the heals of this:

The American Academy of Pediatrics says what children really need for healthy development is more good, old-fashioned playtime. (cbs)

we find this:

Tag, you’re out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they’ll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is “a time when accidents can happen,” said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban. (charlotte.com)

Awesome. I propose that we also remove from schools:

  • all pencils and pens. The danger of being impaled is real.
  • paper. Lord knows that stuff can lacerate!
  • computers. Proven to lead to lead poisoning in China’s children.
  • blackboards. Chalk dust causes pulmonary disease.
  • music classes. Can cause ear canal damage and mental anguish.
  • gym class. Climb a rope? Oh, the insurance premiums!
  • teachers. For their tendency towards sexual exploitation.

I mean, we wouldn’t want our children to have experiences, would we?

no truer words

Did you know there was a consumer electronics company out of Germany with a great name?

MAXFIELD products are synonymous with lifestyle and design in the exciting digital consumer electronics market.

Like its customers, Maxfield has high standards of innovation, technology and price — and this can be seen in every product.

Yes, well, enough about me. What about your company, my German friends? And where are my royalty checks?

call the conspiracists

The movie The Break Up features Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. About the time the movie is being promoted, the two are rumored to be dating. I know -big news, right? Big news helps promote the movie (in theory).

Now I see the movie is coming out on DVD. And guess what? The two stars have reportedly split up. I know -huge news. Huge news should help promote the DVD release (in theory).

My question to those of you who have seen the movie is this: is the movie really that bad?

I wonder…

Location: work
Conundrum: I hit the bathroom, funk it up right, and then wash my hands. But how funky is that door handle? I mean, is there any point in washing up at all?
Don’t: harass me; I know I should wash my hands.
